Conflicting open enrollment periods

I am a little confused. The 2008 Choosing a Medigap Policy "A Guide to Health Insurance for People with Medicare" states on page 11 that the Open enrollment period starts on the first day of the month in which you are both age 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. My underwriting guide states that an applicant must be at least 64 1/2 and be withig six months of his/her enrollment in Part B.

I have a lade whom is turning 65 in November. Can I not go and write her a Med Supp now?

To answer your question. Yes you can write them up on a Med Sup. They have a guaranteed issue period six months before and six months after the effective date of their Medicare Part B.

Medicare Advantage works the same way but only three months before and after (but dont tell Frank I told you that)

Your underwriting guide is correct. However, I don't find many people who want to sign up for a Med Supp policy at age 64 1/2. It is too early for most of them especially since I have to collect a check for the first month's premium. For those turning 65 I usually try to get them about three months before the month they turn 65. They usually have their Medicare card by then also.

That was the "long" answer. The short answer is call them today and setup an appointment and write them a policy now.

If by chance they don't have their Medicare card yet I would write the app and send it in anyway. Just ask them if they will be getting Medicare and Social Security as a result of their past employment. (Should not be a problem for him.) Some wives will draw SS and Medicare as a result of their husband's employment if they have never worked. In that case her Medicare number will be her husband's SS number followed by the letter B.

What do you say to someone that is in their open enrollment period and says to you they are disabled and drawing soc. sec.? Just because they are drawing soc. sec. doesn't mean that their Part A coinsurance and and Part B co payments are paid for does it? They still need a supplement don't they?

What do I say to them? I say, "sign here".

Yes, they still need a supplement. Once they go on Medicare it is the same Medicare that people 65 and over have.

Make sure they do have Medicare. It takes two years after going on disability for their Medicare to start. However, it may start earlier than that if SS back dates the day their disability began.
