How much in premium can the average CSR handle? I understand this will be different for every agency and is dependent on a quite a few factors. The agency would be mostly standard insurance, little to no walk-ins, and 60% homeowners 40% auto. I am just trying to gather information any input would greatly be appreciated.

I would say $2-3M in premium for preferred clients. They pay their bills online or mail the check to the carrier. Only would have to focus on vehicle changes or rewrites etc.

I have 1 CSR who can handle everything and I'm a little over $2M right now. Just her and a sales agent who works from home and I'm not even close to needing more help in the office.

Captives like to see 1 licensed staff for every 600 households. Lets say you have 1.75 policies per household...that's about 1000 policies per licensed staff member. Now that's Allstate who of course wants strong service and I disagree w/ this...

The premium volume isn't a great indicator because we all have different average premiums per policy. For me, I believe you'd need 1 CSR for every 2,500 to 3,000 POLICIES. That translates into around 1,500 households for 1 full time competent CSR.

So I would say you're looking at a fair range of about 1,250 - 1,800 households per CSR depending on their skill level.

Now ultimately if you're "in tune" w/ your operation...you'll start to know when you need help and that's entirely up to your comfort level.
