Disabled Daughter, Pregnant

21 yr old disabled daughter, preggers.

Daughter covered under mom's group plan.

Question one. Is daughters pregnancy a covered expense? I say no, but that is from yrs ago. Things may be different now.

Question two . Will the baby be covered under mom's (grandmother in this case) automatically at birth, or does grandmother have to adopt the baby? If so, how soon does the adoption need to take place to make the baby GI?

Question three . Is the woman legally responsible for her preggo daughters bills and the new baby?

Yes, No, No

This year's Blue group outline.
Benefit is only available to subscriber or spouse. However, benefits are provided for complications of pregnancy on the same basis as any other condition for the subcriber, enrolled spouse or enrolled dependent child.

Glad I looked. It has changed over the years.

how does disabled daughter get preg.

Same as any other daughter.

Define 'disabled'.

Can't say, didn't ask.

Any number of ways to be disabled including Down syndrome.

Thx for the feedback.

The more I look into this, the common response is, it depends . . .

Seems the definitions vary by plan and state.

Now for the rest of the story.

Originally the lady called HR and they told her yes on daughters pregnancy, no on covering the baby, no comment (since it is really a legal question) on the babies charges.

She didn't like that answer, so she started calling other people, including me.

When she didn't like some of my answers I figured this was time to move on to the next one.

So now this is mostly to educate me, and others who may run in to this.

I have had this situation come up a lot.

The child birth will be covered but young mother cannot put the child on the group plan unless Grandparent adopts. State laws are different when it comes to adding grand children. Some states if the GP is claiming the grandchild as a dependent then they can be added to the plan.

Since the parent is disabled the child will be immediately eligible for medicaid.

I have had these situations get very messy

Possibly . . .

I realize there are missing details, but disabled does not automatically = Medicaid.

In GA the child will probably qualify for PeachCare (SCHIP) but can't say that with certainty.

Grandparent applying for guardianship and adding them to the group plan is probably the best way, but HR has already given her answers she did not like.

I have to be honest I have never had a child born to a disabled mother but I would think that would be an automatic for the child to qualify.

Actually you might advise the Adult Mother to put the disabled child on medicaid.

Or just walk away from this one. Its not worth it your time unless you have a shot at picking up the group plan.

I walked away some time ago when it became evident any answer provided was not received unless it was what the mother (of the disabled daughter) wanted to hear. At this point it is more a curiosity than anything, just in case it comes up again.

Also, I have had some really good input in this thread without the usual sniping.

The old kill the messenger thing? Been there myself.
