Doing Your Homework

Is there a free website that I can use to do a search for potential FE prospects, to see where in my county people who are 55-80 years old and 15-50K income reside? I'd like to use that data for direct mailers.

Buy a list from Josh. Oh wait, Free? Phone book. This is a business for Entrepreneurs (capital E), No government or union benefits.

I need an answer to a question.

Here is an answer that fits your question perfectly.

Don't want that answer.

(I wish there was some kind of retard smilely face I could add here)

I'm not looking to "buy a list" and I'm not looking for Josh.

The closest you're going to get to that is going to be ReferenceUSA if you your library participates in their program. There are limits on what you can do with it in terms of downloads and depending on how you are going to do your mailer (may only be able to download 50/day or something like that). I believe they do have unlimited views so if you want to hand address each piece you can probably do fine with that. I don't believe it does an NCOA scrub so you might do that work and have 5% of the mail come back and/or go to the wrong address which would basically cover the cost of paying for a list, but it's probably just about what you're looking for.

The reality is that keeping a data set updated and accurate costs money so that's why list brokers charge for lists. The lists I broker are aggregated from over 300 different sources (that all want money) which makes them extremely accurate, but it isn't free.

Do you plan on doing your own piece? The reason why I ask is that most mail houses will include a list in the cost of their mailer so that may be another option.

Yes - go to the government census website and they'll have information about ages and household income broken down by zip code.

You would be better off using one of Josh's lists. I did a quick search of the US census listing to find some of the hot spots in the western part of my state which is not densely populated.

Right now your time is money. You knocked on 50 doors in a day with little results. How did you decide what area to knock?
You probably could have reached more people cold calling on the phone with a scrubbed list.

I don't know anything about your background, but you seem really clueless about how to work this business. People are trying to give you good solid advice but since is isn't the answer you want to hear you disregard it. This tells me you aren't very teachable and maybe should look for some other line of business.

The mail house you use for your mailer will provide that data for free. You will not save any money by trying do do your own mail, not even taking into account the time it will take you.
