Elevance Health will provide smartphones with unlimited talk, text and data to some of its Medicaid members.

In a Jan. 10 news release, the payer said the program is designed to give Medicaid members access to their care teams and digital health tools. The program is a collaboration between Elevance Health, Verizon, Samsung, AT&T and T-Mobile.

The effort is funded by the Affordable Connectivity Program, a federal initiative to provide internet access to low-income households, according to the release.

"The lack of sufficient internet connectivity and technology access remains a significant barrier for many — increasing health inequities," Kurt Small, president of Elevance Health's Medicaid business, said in the release. "This program aims to directly address this challenge and helps improve the health of the people we serve."

Elevance plans to launch the program in multiple states in 2024.

I know of agents who contract with Comcast Affordable Connectivity Program and get paid about 100 per application and also contract with free phone vendors however they do it mostly for the leads.

ACP is not funded past April of this year unless congress funds it.

In 2021, Congress established the ACP in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and appropriated $14.2 billion for the program. Current ACP funding is projected to run out at the end of April 2024. As of January 2024, Congress has not appropriated additional funding for the ACP to keep the program going beyond April 2024. As a result, the FCC has begun taking steps to wind down the ACP. Wind-down steps will result in ending the ACP at which time enrolled households will no longer receive the program discounts.

Gosh! I remember the old days when the only thing health insurance companies had to offer as incentives was a road atlas (which agents paid for) or a refrigerator calendar.

Times have changed .. .
