Facebook and Other Social Media

I'm just curious to see others FB pages and other social media (websites don't count LOL) and how you reach out to potential contacts.

For example, do you use twitter? Snapchat? That dating app where you swipe right or left?

What do you think works or doesn't work?

I keep debating whether to keep it up or not - only because my personal newsfeed has gotten rather nasty & political. (I keep unfollowing people and wonder if it's even worth it. But I'd lose contact with many people along with some specialized groups I belong to.)

However, with the targeted paid ads one can do for a specific demographic and radius, I'll be marketing some webinars via Facebook... one day. I'll create a 60-second video ad for that particular demographic along with the specific days and times and encourage people to sign up. Plus, this should help me to build up my email newsletter list to keep in regular contact with folks on top of liking my page.

My page specifically, I just post current financial articles with a little commentary. That's about it for now. I've got about 30 Facebook Friends who "like" my page and I get a little interaction every now and then. However, it has not generated any business for me, nor was it really structured or intended to do so (yet).

Facebook works well for marketing. I generate a steady stream of prospects. Not everyone is active on twitter. However, I am constantly trying to collect twitter handles. If I see a prospect on twitter and they have a relatively high klout score, I take a close look at them on other social media, they are probably a good prospect for me to pursue. People with higher klout scores have higher influence on social media. SO if they recommend you to others, they are more likely to generate more buzz.

I use snapchat for existing clients. In my old days at NY Life 12 years ago, I was taught to set up once a quarter COI meeting and try to go through all the business cards the COI has in their wallet. You tried to collect 20 to 30 names and numbers. Now it is much easier to go through your COI's friend list on facebook, twitter and linkedin, and try to focus on people they interact the most.

I think it all depends on where you can be of use to people. Where can you be seen as the expert and start to develop that trust and relationship with potential clients? It's not always as easy as just getting leads from a source.

I've seen FB work for folks and other even use Snapchat to their advantage. A lot of this stuff takes some serious time to build up a following and start to generate revenue off of.

David, I almost didnt know this was your post without your photo in your avatar. LOL. Where are you? Bring back the pic!

I agree completely about the FB page. I have gotten one call from it, someone who is also on my personal friend list. He had 2 60+ friends with early signs of dementia and wanted LTC. Little too late.

I have Twitter but just use it for poking fun at the Trump-nation mainly. My former colleagues at NYL use twitter as a tool to post the most banal, boring and trite salesy stuff. I am going to design a website next. Then figure out how to use it :D

I'm a NYL refugee, and Id be interested to know how to approach these friends of your clients on FB?

Country wants us to be active on social media, but only posting what they approve or put out. Sales-y, quasi-informational stuff pimping their products is largely what I have access to. Even states in the contract that I can't have any other web presence or social media solely involving insurance or finance. (turned my website chooseluke.com into a "consumer education site" just to stay compliant.)

Social Media Marketing is a tricky beast. One thing I did learn is to be "friends" with your clients on FB (had to create a dummy account for this, since my personal FB is less than ideal) and when you write their insurance, tag them in a post thanking them for their business and make it public. This way everyone on your list sees it and all their friends see that just did business with you. Creates access to their people, turning each client into an instant COI. Some of our more tenured agents will get 3-6 leads a week off this alone.

Some of that is for your protection. It is real easy to screw up and say something completely stupid. This is especially true if securities licensed. I remember when I was, texting was not allowed. They had no way to monitor it. I suspect someone has come up with a system so RRs can have their texts monitored.

A lot of it is just being heavy-handed. You work with local agents, captive or otherwise, because they can market better than you, so let them.
