Fenced Pool

When a carrier asks if a pool is fenced, do they mean the actual pool is fenced or the back yard is fenced so others cant wonder in and fall in your pool. I always thought the pool itself needs to be fenced. AM I making any sense?

Our carriers want the actual "pool" fenced with a locked gate. Preventing unauthorized, unsupervised access is their primary goal.

The backyard being fenced in is adequate with most carriers. As 1manshow says, this prevents unathorized, unsupervised access. Some carriers have strange rules on pools though, you have to ask.

If its a larger yard, this may not work, you'll have to ask the carrier on how close the fence needs to be to the pool.

If you can get a contract with Erie Insurance, they only required that an inground pool be fenced. Above ground pools do not have to be, although they prefer it.

Some carriers not only require the pool (or yard) to be fenced, but also require self-locking gates.

However, some carriers will allow an unfenced pool with the presence of a sturdy (i.e. someone could fall on it and it would not collapse) pool cover.

It all depends on the specific carrier (or how "in" you are with your underwriter ).
