First Accident

Yesterday at 12 noon while driving to work, I had my first car accident since I began driving 7 years ago at 22. It is not easy to stay accident free in Nwe York City driving but while standing sill in the extreme left lane of the Grand Central Parking with other traffic, I hear a car's brakes screeching, smoke and I managed to turn my car into the guard rail as to avoid hitting the car ahead of me that was about 5 feet away. It sounded like an explosion but none the less, I was taken to the hospital and spent the next 9 hours be evaluated. I have soft tissue injury lots of pain and bruises but I will be okay. I could not make it to where the car was towed to but the shop sent me about 10 pictures showing me the damage which consists of rear and front bumpers, trunk and left quater panel. Not bad considering it sounded much worse. My issue is that the the other driver was insured by GEICO, she admitted to the Police that she was not paying attention and it is in the accident report and also called her GEICo agent and stated it was her fault. The collison place tells me that I do not even have to report it to my insurer as GEICO will pick up the entire bill to include a car rental until my car is fixed in about a week. I have full coverage/collison and a 500 deduct on my present policy......Does this sound right, am I breaking any laws here which I don't want too.
This is confusing to me or should I just call me insurer and let things fall unders its natural progression. :nah:

Don't take insurance advice from a car repairman! Call your agent and let him work with you.

Anytime you have an accident you should report it to YOUR insurance company even if it seems obvious it was the other persons fault. If you were rear-ended, and the other party exclaims it was their fault, it "should be" a clear cut case and the other persons company will most likely accept liability. Your policy reads that any accident should be report promptly to the insurance company. Many times this is to protect you...

Call GEICO yourself and get things going with them asap.

Let's just say GEICO is dragging their feet, taking forever to get a statement from their insured, arguing over what damages they'll pay etc...You can always use your insurance. Now you will part with your deductible in the immediate, but your company will subrogate against GEICO to get back your deductible and the money they paid to fix your car. Be aware..that process can take months.

If it were me, I'd be on the phone with GEICO asap & will have notified my company as well. I would have confidence that GEICO will accepting liabilty quickly, get my car fixed, and move on. Good luck!

Why take the risk, phone your insurer and explain what happened.

In the UK insurance companies are becoming more wary of any claims especially because of the rise in crash for cash accidents.

In an accident never take anything for granted or assume anything. Remember you cannot go back later to change things.

I always suggest taking as pictures on your mobile to support your case even if it is clear that it was not your fault.

thank you all. I reported to my insurance company and GEICO. I cannot beleive how swiftly everything has gone, I am actually wondering if all is okay. My car is being fixed of 3K damage by GEICO, I have a car rental, my insurance is covering any medical and my bruises are healing fine........this is unreal.

Well to be honest, I was plannng to keep the car until Spring but because of this, I will be in the market for a new car within the next few weeks. ....again thank you for all your help:GEEK:
