I am currently a captive agent with a company that shall remain unnamed and I'm thinking of going independent. I don't know the first thing about independent agencies and have some questions.

Would an IA let me work out of his office and split the commission while I learn the ropes?

If I did that would I get to keep the policies I sold (or could I buy them from him when I was ready to go out on my own)?

Is it possible to sell P&C from home? (I currently do 99% of my business over the phone anyways, but the company I represent requires a storefront.)

Any other advice would be appreciated.

The right agent will be glad to do that. You would have to see what kind of deal you can work out on who keeps the clients but you should be able to arrive at something satisfactory. You just have to find the right place.

Is there an industry standard on the commission split? Also, I've heard IA's get higher commissions, is that true? I currently average 10% on standard home/auto.
