Going from the Handz People to Independent

I am currently a captive agent with a company that shall remain unnamed and I'm thinking of going independent. I don't know the first thing about independent agencies and have some questions.

Would an IA let me work out of his office and split the commission while I learn the ropes?

If I did that would I get to keep the policies I sold (or could I buy them from him when I was ready to go out on my own)?

Is it possible to sell P&C from home? (I currently do 99% of my business over the phone anyways, but the company I represent requires a storefront.)

Any other advice would be appreciated.

I forgot to also ask for advice specifically from people that have made the switch from the same company as me.

The answers to most of your questions is yes. So many people think that being independent is difficult. It is only hard if the broker lacks discipline. Today's broker now can, if they choose, work from home. This is due to the new technologies now available that were not in years past. Good luck.

I think you are in Utah,am I correct? if so I have someone you can talk to he has p+c,commercial and a little L+h.PM me and I will give you more info

What type of insurance do you want to sell? Are you only P&C? I think independent is the only way to go. Just do a lot of research and ask a lot of questions. Selling P&C could be difficult to do out of your home. I think health insurance is the easiest thing to do out of your home as an independent agent. Good luck with whatever you do!
