Golden Rule UW Trials

They still have something in the brochure that doesn't seem right. On or about Page 3.

"Sample savings with our Preferred Network"

Lab work $149 charge repriced to $10.33. Misprint? That was there last year and I thought that seemed a bit too much of a discount.

That doesnt sound like 80/20 on lab. Is that the new brochure ... I gotta go look now

Just got a call from a very excited MI agent friend of mine - GR starting in April will be applying rate increases instead of riders to the standard conditions (asthma, allergies, etc...)

As we all know now, GR either riders, declines or increases the plan deductible....no rate ups.

Well, I just got off the phone and GR is doing a multi-state trial with rate-ups. This is fantastic news. Right now 100% of the reason I write any other carrier beside GR (in MD) is when they decline or rider out pre-ex. However, if they move to Assurant's philosophy of offering rate-ups and coverage pre-ex they will dramatically increase their business and persistency.

I hope GR gets the clue and this goes nationwide.

It is best for the people if they do it this way but of course brings a higher cost to them in turn. Do you know what other states are involved?

MI is a trial for GR. Hopefully they will roll out these changes in other states by yrs end.

No waivers sounds nice but it also can mean more rejections and/or higher rates.

Recently ran into someone on the web with a pregnant girlfriend. Neither had insurance. I didn't think there was anything available but . . . surprise! They applied for and got a policy with BX.

Seems in MI Blue is a carrier of last resort. They take anyone who applies and cover pre-ex (including pregnancy) after 6 months.

Anytime the state dictates what carriers must cover you can expect rates to go up which can inhibit sales. A pure free market is best.

MI does not have a risk pool.

MI BCBS does not have medical questions, they do have 6 month pre ex without prior coverage.

BCBS is technically not an insurance company, according to state charter - this always puzzled me - they are also exempt from taxes.

MI BCBS pays 8% commission on individual and does not accept business direct. Good luck trying to get appointed or reaching anyone at the company. You have a better chance sending smoke signals than getting a call back or email response.

Yep BCBS are non-profit

BCBS of Michigan only works thru MGA's until you get into large group. As far as I know you have to get the appointments via the MGA's.

They serve a good purpose and the no underwriting is nice, but the Ind policies have little drug coverage and 120 day per benefit period of hospital.

On the group side they dominate the market with a 70% share. They have some very interesting bills in the Mi Senate now. Most of the for profits are lobbying hard to stop the current bills.
