Help With Test in CA

Can someone please let me know how much I am going to have to pay to get my License in CA. I am going for my P/C. I was talking to a peson the other day and he told me I have to pay $600.00 for some sort of a back ground check. Is this true? He dosn't have a insurance license that is why I am asking you guys.
