HO3 Claim Question

Hey guys. My partner and I (work partner) are having an argument. If a house gets water damage that comes from the ground (rising from rain), is this considered a flood damage or will a HO3 cover this?

Not sure I understand the question. How does water come from the ground? Or are you talking about the ground rising (earth movement, i.e., mudslide type of thing)?

If it is pooled water (or creek, stream, river) that overflows, I assume its flooding. If it's not pooled water, then how is it rising from the ground?

Not sure I understand exactly what you are asking either...but I am almost sure it won't be a covered claim.

sorry, it rained so much the water came in to the house. Not through the roof or a window. Through underneath the door. It is pooled water.

It's going to depend on what caused the water to back up. In my area, that would only be caused by a backed up storm drain, which may or may not be covered on an HO-3 policy.

I'm assuming that normally, proper drainage carries the rainwater away, that something 'else' happened that caused the water to back up. That is the piece that is missing in this scenerio.

Good catch. Though, with rain, I would assume it could easily affect over 2 acres. I gotta admit, I didn't know the 2 acre rule, till now. Of course, the other determining factor is 2 houses, rather than 2 acres. For reference:

Floodsmart.gov: Flooding and Flood Risks Overview
What is a Flood?

Anywhere it rains, it can flood. A flood is a general and temporary condition where two or more acres of normally dry land or two or more properties are inundated by water or mudflow. Many conditions can result in a flood: hurricanes, broken levees, outdated or clogged drainage systems and rapid accumulation of rainfall.

My guess is, if it rained hard enough for one house to get water damage, it rained hard enough for 2.

Did you leave the door open?

Claims frequently paid where an insured left their windows open while they ran errands (some even forgot to close windows when going on vacation).

Of course, when they got back they had damage.

Covered.
