Home lost in Palisades fire

My home was lost in a fire. My loss of use is 115K. Why do they ask for receipts (hotel, rent)? Is that 115K not a fixed payout? Am I shortchanging myself if I rent a cheap place during reconstruction? I found a place that I can rent for 3.5K per month. If it takes 2 years to rebuild, that's only 84K + my 2K in hotel stays. Am I shortchanging myself of 31K?
One article claims that these types of fires get expidited. Homes are built in 4 to six months instead of up to 1 1/2 years before a shovel hits the ground. IF true, I might be shortchanging myself on quality of stay by a LOT.

These are all great questions and the best person to answer them is someone that has your insurance policy in front of them. So your agent and insurer are the best places to ask.

I would start saving 100% of your receipts for the next three years in a giant box. Every single receipt.

Many folks start off in a hotel and then move to an apartment or house of similar quality.

What exactly does your "Loss of Use" [or Loss of Rents] cover? - go ahead and copy/paste the language into this forum. There are some folks on here that really might be able to help you.

I hope for you that you can rebuild in 4 to 6 months, but in Southern California - ah I would not expect this.

Or maybe annotating and then photographing them with your phone and creating some kind of an organized online backupable storage system for the photos?

I am clueless about how to organize stuff on computers but just from reading agent posts here, it sounds like the days of having to store stuff in grocery sacks are over?

Tell that to @Markthebroker. I believe he still has his collection of Midget Playboys in grocery sacks....but I am sure he has that collection properly insured. I bet it isn't a tiny premium either

With the number of data breaches happening, it's only a matter of time until taking files off computers takes off.

I have an idea for a business where we go into offices that are digitized and convert all their digital files to paper. Set up their filing cabinets, train their staff, typewriters, analog phones the whole 9 yards.
