Hi All,

This is a strange story and I am in a real difficult situation. I bought washer and dryer from "Best Buy" and they came to install it today. During the installation they broke a one pipe inside the dry wall and that caused a major leak inside the dry wall and that messed up by wooden floor too. I was told they are insured for these type of incidents. I denied to sign any delivery papers and they had to took the new Washer and dryer back as they were unable to install this due to the plumbing issue.
Then I called a plumber and they fixed everything and the invoice is about $2100. I already called "best buy" third part company Insurance called "gallagher bassett" and filed a report for the incident. I was asked to keep the receipt and said they are going to call me soon. my Question is should I go with that insurance company or should I call my home insurance company to file a claim. I'm not sure if they are going to cover these type incidents.... Please help.......... and Thank you

Stick with best buy policy. Since you already paid for the claim they should send you the $2100 you paid.

Best Buy, for sure. Gallagher Basset will send out an independent adjuster to photograph the damages (or repairs in your case) and get a copy of the receipt. So long as you took photos prior to repairs and the plumber did not overcharge you by a huge amount, it should be just fine, if it happened as you say it did. The only possible problem is if everything was approaching the end of it's anticipated use life, in which case they will likely pay Actual Cash Value (replacement cost minus depreciation based on age and anticipated use life), as is common on third party claims. The age of the damaged material and the anticipated use life is very important when deciding who to file the claim with.

Should you report this to your homeowners carrier, the end result would be similar, with the exception of the fact that you would end up eating the cost of your deductible and that if you have Replacement Cost coverage, you would eventually see the difference between ACV & RCV minus your deductible.

On smaller losses, unless everything is 50 years old, it is generally better financially to pursue the damages from the party that caused the problem. On larger losses, it might benefit you to go through it via your homeowners carrier, should you have proper coverage in place.

Stick with the Best Buy insurance. They were the ones who caused the damage and have the insurance ready to cover their mistakes. This thing more than likely happens fairly regularly and they will know what to do. I wouldn't bother with your own insurance and just let Best Buy take care of it.

Shopping for homeowner insurance is one of those nagging home buying details that sometimes manages to slip though the cracks. It's not unusual for insurance agents to receive last-minute frantic phone calls from title and / or escrow companies requesting a home insurance binder.
