Homeowners Appointments

Hello I'm new to this forum. I recently started my own p&c agency in Texas. This only my second month with the business and I'm having trouble getting agency appointments for home insurance. So far I have only gotten Foremost, National Lloyds, and Texas Security General. Is there anyone out there who could help me out in securing some appointments for home insurance. Fyi I've had my p&c for six years and was working for a captive agent.

Progressive. Mercury. I have my non resident for Texas and have access to other carriers. Maybe we can talk. [email protected].

I can't speak about Texas specifically, but I do know in some areas, carrier appointments are very tough to get, other areas, they are available for the asking, just depends.

Starting with the basics, have you talked with carrier reps to see about getting appointed? I assume so, but you didn't actually say this. If so, why won't they appoint you? Can you fix this? I realize some just simply want years in the business before they will even talk to you, some want a sizable book of business, etc.

So, for now, you can do something like Superior Access or Insurance Noodle, which will get you access to more carriers, but neither are good long term solutions for your main carriers, you'll need direct access sooner, rather than later.

You can find a cluster that will get you appointed. There are many advantages to clusters along with some disadvantages (you can probably search the forum for 'cluster' and get this info). In a lot of areas though, clusters are getting about as picky as the carriers, but some will take on newer agents, especially those with some experience prior to becoming an agent.

Good luck!

Try writing through an MGA for a while that allows book ownership though not necessarily binding authority.

Over here, Appalachian Underwriters is one of them. You get 2-3 that offer 1-2 carriers each (join your state independent agency organization like the Big I) to write with. That will provide a big enough book to go ahead and start leveraging larger appointments.

You can also join a cluster like SIAA or Iroquois if you chose to.

I just started too. It is very hard. Kemper, and Arrowhead told me they will if I have an office, or store front. I am looking for one now. It's going to be the only way it seems. fyi...I have the ones you wrote about too.

Find a General Agency in your area, and work thru them until you have production / loss ratios to show that you deserve an appointment. You will give up some commission but in the long run this is the way to go as it's a quick solution and it lets you focus on producing right now.
