OK, so the companies can get you leads of house holds over what ever age you want, what income level and usially a number for them. How. How do they do it and why can we not do it on our own?

You could try to do it on your own, but probably don't have either the search marketing expertise or the upfront capital to invest in it. People have always said about marketing that "they know that half their money is wasted, but don't know which half." With search marketing and the current state of tools and techniques, if you don't know what you are doing it may be more like "which 90%". Other marketing methods (direct mail, direct email, cold calling, etc) have miniscule success rates and high upfront costs. To me, the greatest thing about lead buying is that you cut out all that. Now, not all leads are equal and certainly not all of them close but, compared to generating the leads yourself I think the (potential) ROI is much higher.

Could you get into more detail about your question? There are tons of ways that lead companies generate data. A short list would include survey responders, affiliate programs, credit card data, association data, mortgage records, birth records, phone book, verifying data with USPS, telemarketing, internet records, etc. It wouldn't be cost effective to do much of that yourself. What type of leads are you talking about? What are you calling a lead?

Well say you want leads for people over 65 or people who have a house hold income of 100grand+ per year. How do they get the names? Because if I knew how they get the names, it would not bother me to do the mailings myself. I would rather do the leg work then pay somebody to do something I could do myself.

Call Steve at TLClists.com. HE can hook you up with the list and it'll cost you around a dime per record depending on how many you order.

Some organizations have hundreds of lead sites online that capture the data and then they sell the leads many times over. If you buy a lead from an org like this and the cost is in the range of $8-$15, they are selling it 5x on average. Also, organizations use call centers to provide leads. Many of these centers are out of the country so the cost of the lead acquisition is much less. Their marketing departments model lists to predetermined demographics for the type of lead list they wish to build.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

A good list company I have used for the 65+ market is www.westernresource.net. They are a subsidiary of knowledge based marketing which is a huge demographic list company. They will also provide you with peel and stick labels if you want to do your own mailings.

I think maybe you are confusing leads with targeted marketing lists.

I just give them out to agents that place business with us.

Well, yes and no. I understand that the leads come from a list that they mail, but I was wondering how they get the information. How they know the income range of an area and is there a way that we as the agents could do that on our own without spending money to have it done for us.
