How Much Should an P&c Agent Produce?

It depends. I don't use policy count or premium as a measuring stick. What type of business are you writing. Mainstreet stuff at 15% commission or surplus lines stuff or auto at 10% commission. $126,000 in commish (plus probably another $30K in contingent commission to the house) is excellent... $84,000 per year (10%) is good but not great.

At about the 3 year mark your new business will slow down a bit because retention and service issues start taking up more and more time. The avg book of P&C business hovers around $400K for a reason. To break through that mark you really have to be a disciplined prospector and you need a really good account manager handling your renewals so you can continue to hunt new business.

Solid advice.
He has been a game changer for me

He is okay... i guess... We generate our own leads, mostly Pay Per Click and SEO.

That post was in 2011. I'm sure SEO and PPC tatics are different now.

If you're new, just door knock. You can get 80-100 leads a month easily just by canvassing cookie cutter suburban homes 15-20 hours a week in the evenings.
Saturdays are good too between 9am and 1pm.

I am not bringing anywhere near that, and I am considered doing well. Good job, keep it up. What you should really be gauging it by is how much you are taking home.

Each area's premium will be different, I assume area's like Texas,California,Florida are the highest of premium states. Most of the agent friends I have in 2 of the 3 states that are INDY use the 40k a month p&c premium as a yardstick to see if that person will make it. If your doing 70k I would say that is above average.

Good luck to you and keep up the good work man,

Wow! I suck! I need to get moving.

Sorry...the way I was reading your post was that you were closing 20-25 % of your quotes...which would mean you'd have to quote on $280k of business...which is a lot of work.
But you are closing 20-25% of your leads....which is great.

For reference...I have 2 years in the biz.
I get no leads.....all cold calls and networking.
I bring in about $120K of new business a month....which I write about $50k.
If my quote is competitive...I can usually close it.

You are doing great. I guess this old guy has to raise his bar and make a few hundred more cold calls a week.

So you write 50K in new business each month? That is fantastic. I am not doing anywhere near that.

I use internet leads and networking. Just started postcards also.

I'm at the peak of my career (thus far..) and my personal capacity is maxed. I have somebody run my quotes through the rater & handle my back end paperwork. I do about 120 policies / month.

No human can do more then that.

How the hell do you do 120 /month. That is incredible! Whats your secret? Are you on the phone all day?

Very impressive! You must have quite a few carriers for that kind of volume.

My carriers destroy everybody, I have a really large/cultivated referral network, I'm doing all new home buyers so their auto is usually outdated & over priced, I work no less then 13 hours per day 6 days per week & I'm on my phone 24/7.

I have a very unbalanced life keeping up w/ the new business. I recently started grinding my teeth all day as a result of the fast pace lifestyle & I'm actually quite miserable w/ the lack of balance.

Theres the secret.
