I agree, there are no guarantees unless someone is using paid links. In my opinion, organic is the way to go. SEO can be done on your own - it just takes time and patience.

Google will put on their search pages what they want, you can make reasonable predictions as to what you expect to happen, but that's all. I would guess that most firms that 'guarantee' a top place mean that you will get that for your domain name - that's something a site would be unlucky not to get.
