I have been licensed in PA for L & H, Accident and P & C since 1983. Since last few years I am not active in writing any insurance for personal reasons. I am planning to establish back in business. Life and Health companies I can get appointments but I have problems with P & C companies. Any suggestions as to how can I approach getting appointed with P & C carriers as an independent agent/broker?

Find your regional rep for Progressive and some of the other carriers that will open up new agents fairly easily. Once you are established for a bit, the others will come knocking on your door.

Might want to put together a somewhat comprehensive marketing/business model or plan. Prospective carriers love to see that kind of stuff.

Try to write 15/15 carriers or better. Progressive starts out at 10/8 and at that level of commission you are losing money writing the policy.

Just a warning, in my area, carriers are getting very picky on who they appoint. They want to know that you will be successful, which is a polite way of saying they want proof your loss ratios wont kill them.

Because of this, a lot of standard/preferred carriers won't take on new agents. Your options are any mix of the following:

- Get appointed with Progressive, who (in my area) is good for motorcycles and other toys, a name everyone recognizes, but a bit pricey for most drivers.
- Get appointments with some non-standard carriers. Write some business to get money coming in the door. Some non-standards are brutal to work with and may pay 'as-earned'.
- Work with Superior Access or other General Agencies until you can get appointed on your own. Just be sure the GA supports you getting your own appointments.

Wow, carriers here in Pa are appointing just about anyone with low production requirements like 1-2 apps/month. Kinda blows any exclusivity or loyalty you might have had when those appointments happen to agents right in your neighborhood.

Guess it will depend on the state he/she's in and the appetite of the carriers.
