I am still trying to decide what kind of insurance I want to sell? What can I sell without an office? Or should I try to get a part time position working under an agent with his own office?

Is this a business where I will be doing nothing but cold calling all day? Or does that depend on the type of insurance I am selling?

Search for a Virtual Office in your area. These are offices that you pay a small amount to use as your physical address. They'll offer phone answering services and an "office on demand" for when you need it for appointments.

You might only need an office for people who aren't business owners. See business owners in THEIR offices and see their employees at their work. For other folks, having an office is a way to know that you're "legit".

Keep in mind that insurance is a "mentorship and an apprenticeship" business. You'll WANT to partner with someone to help you get started (and so you won't screw things up).

Im in NY. It looks like with Life and Health, alot of people can start out without an office and work out of there home? Maybe thats a good way to get my feet wet?

Upstate or the city?

Either way, NY is a horrible state to do health insurance in. Products are horrible, few carriers, high rates, low commissions. Life isn't bad. Do you have a network of friends/family/other relationships you can use to sell insurance or would you be doing most of your own lead generation? With life insurance most folks will meet with the prospects in their own home and make the presentation and sale there rather than having them come into an office, so maybe that's the ticket.

There are marketing organizations that work with part-timers which you could link up with. Most if not all at least offer Life/Health and series 6, 63 for securities products.

Ask around and see if NY requires a sponsor for licensing? If not you could get licensed and then find an organization to work with.
