How to Work in P&C Without Working in Sales

If you are nervous about being on your own but want to sell, go out and sell. If you don't want to sell then go into the corporate area or become a CSR.

Ask yourself, if you have the knowledge, which would you do?

You're going to suck at both to begin with. Sorry, just being honest. But why suck at the one you don't like, have to restart, then suck again at the one you want to do?

If you want to do sales then go sell. Work as a producer, get a haircut in commissions, and go learn your markets, carriers, underwriting, and everything while under the E&O and guidance of a more experienced agent.

And yes, it'll still scare the **** out of you once you go on your own. There is no real way to mitigate that- you took the training wheels off and no longer have a safety net.

If you want to go corporate then figure out where and pursue it.

It just sounds like you're afraid and want to mitigate that. There really isn't a way to do it because there is no class on what you are doing. You can get your CPCU, CIC, ARM, CLSR, OMG, WTF, BBQ, and all other designations and it still won't help prepare you. Just go for it.
