Hello all.

I am suffering from a bit of uncertinty here and need some good advice. I am being forced to change careers due to a chronic medical condition and Im thinking of getting into the insurance industry.

I am currently working as a respiratory therapist in a large hospital but can no longer be around sick people.

I currently hold a BS in Cardiopulmonary Sciences and Im 9 credits into an MBA program. The company I work for sells health plans and has some openings. The problem is I know NOTHING about health plans. I cant even tell you the difference between a PPO and HMO!

Where do I start if I want to learn about health plans? Should I just take the 40 hour State 2-15 course?

Heres what the job descriptions look like and its all chinese to me!
WHERE DO I START? SELLING AFLAC?

" knowledge of medical benefits, provider reimbursement methodologies, medical and dental terminology, knowledge of claim adjudication and benefit plan application for Point of Service, HMO or Medicare plans. knowledge of Medicare/Medicaid/Medigap coverage/guidelines and Commercial HMO/Health Insurance contracts. knowledge of CPT, ICD-9 and HCPCS coding system." "Knowledge and understanding of Federal Medicare program, Medicare Advantage Plans, and the medical insurance industry in general. PAHM or other health care related certification "

Getting into the insurance industry may be very rewarding for you. Starting on the health care side of the business might be a mistake that haunts you for decades.

Re: I Need Help with Life Changing Decesion.

The health insurance (individual) market is in a state of transition. Nobody knows where it will end up. It might be semi-lucrative. It may not.

I'm simply saying that there might be other options that make more sense.

More specifically this company is "Group Plans" and suplemental Medicare.

Any how. What would be a good place to start to learn entry level health insurance?

I would rethink your decision unless you have a ton of cash to live on and then the odds are stacked against you. Commissions have been slashed and who knows what will happen.
