I Want to Work Only Part Time...Any Suggestions?

Mmm... If I wanted to be part time, I think I would play it the same way a $12 million producer I know of does it. He "works" (in the office seeing people) only 2 days a week.

I think I would play this that I am so successful that I only work 2 (or 3, whatever) days a week and I would strictly enforce it. Who knows? You might actually start believing it yourself.

I would have a real attitude (in a friendly way). I would figure out a way to make part time MY choice, not an economic choice. If you deal with retired people in Florida, I think they will understand where you are coming from. "Tuesday, Mr. Jones? Sorry, I always play golf on Tuesdays, but I would be happy to meet with you on Wednesday." Wash the cat or whatever on "golf" days until you have enough business to fill up the week. Or hell, play golf but at a public course.

I think your crazy to think that anyone is going to be happy to work for an agent that claims he's goofing off for 3 of the 5 days during the week. Ha, Good luck to you if that's the plan. Someone just starting out should probably be more open and honest, say:

"I've got a large number of bills to pay so I'm starting my business part time and available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, however I know my clients need me full time so I'll be here for you for appointment any time that works for both you and me."

It won't matter is it is only a part-time job as long as you can earn enough from it and you excel in it. Working part-time can also be your training ground. It may help you achieve your dream or develop your gift.

I recommend selling different types of insurance part time & making it a full time gig. Eample - dedicating parts to your day to different types of insurance programs. But - the insurance industry does lend itself to part time work!

Thanks for great responses, everyone here has a different opinion on whether working full or part time will be a success.

VacantHomeIns made a good pointg in selling different types, I found this helpful because it will allow me to see what areas I am able to sell the most and make the most money.

From what I have learned so far, people are in this business for two main reasons.... 1) to make money 2) to help people. I believe most do it for reason 1.

I will seek p/t work from a few different companies.

But also remember that this business is not for everyone, having this license is in many ways much like the real estate business, many people get licensed, few are truly successful. Thoughts?

Once again, Thanks for the great replys.

Maybe some people aren't passionate about insurance. Whatever kind of insurance it is they sell.

Most people aren't trained well.

It could also be insurance just isn't for that person. This happens a lot. In all industries. Someone is really great at selling one kind of product but not the next. For example, I knew an older guy in his 50's, he made about $1,500 a week selling discount travel packages over the phone. He got licensed, couldn't get into it. Freaking guy tanked. He was so used to the ether/excitement of selling vacation packages, he didn't know how to or couldn't learn how to sell health insurance. So he went back to selling travel and has never been happier. If insurance ends up not being for you, don't be discouraged. Be happy that you didn't waste more time in a business that's not a match for your personality.

Bottom line, most agents do not come into this business prepared.

If you want to use internet leads. You need a minimum of $500 a week. At $7 a pop, that's about 70 leads a week or 14 a day if you work 5 days a week, before returns. Anything less than that and you will go home broke. And you need that $2,000 in lead money up front. Don't try starting out with $500 the first week, and expect for the commissions to roll in the next week. Deals don't pop off when you want them to. Don't forget you will need living expenses, that's another $500 a week for most single people out there. So you need $4k, for just one month. This is if you want to work internet leads. If you want to dial for dollars, this is a great method, you just need those living expenses, probably a part time job, $95 for mojo dialer and $99 for a data list.

Don't be a sucker.

Break it down.

I gotta repeat:

If you try to get into this with a "feel sorry for me, I'm just getting started and need the business" attitude you will get nowhere.

People want a pro. This is important stuff to them. If you give the impression you are not a pro, then good luck.
