At what point does a P&C personal lines book of business requrie a CSR?

Is there a suggested rule of thumb on the number of CSRs to policies in force?

I am very interested in this as well. There are a few agents I know with $3M books and work it themselves (don't know how) and others with $5M books and 5 CSRs.

My original plan was to try to make it to $1M and manage that myself then get a CSR.

There are huge variances in the answer to this. For instance, my experience is auto requires more CSR's than homeowners. Commercial is even more than auto.

On auto, nonstandard requires more work than preferred.

You really have to ask in context of your book of business, there isn't any secret formula. It also depends if you want to grow or if you want to maintain. Growing requires more, obviously.

In general, I would plan the first CSR at 500-750 policies (GWP isn't as relevant, except in paying them). I would then add a CSR every 750-1000 policies. The reason the first one is sooner is simply if you want to grow, you can't spend all of your time answering phones and changing lienholders, chasing down claims, calling for payments, etc.

Good call. We have several thousand clients and the needs depend on the type of clients. I find that non standard auto require the most service while our commercial require less.

Also depends on the CSR's training/ability. I put a great deal of sales responsibility on my CSR's Each is responsible for overseeing 150K in revenue as well as certain production quotas. Critical to have the right people...
