Insure Car Under Friend's Name?

Hello,

Suppose that I have car insurance for my car.

I have a friend who has a PA ID (not a driving license) who wants to buy a car from a dealer. Since he doesn't have a driver license, he wouldn't be able to buy insurance.

The question is, can I buy car insurance for the car that my friend wants to buy?

This is a temporary thing... He is getting the right paperwork for the license and it would take about 2 weeks or more.

If this isn't possible, suppose he buys the car under my name, do you think the carfax report would count me as a previous owner when we change the title later (gift).

Thank you for your help!

So he doesn't even have a learner's permit? Does he live with you? If he does, you can buy it and then add him as an additional driver once he is licensed.

I don't get why can't he wait until he get his license? Even if you buy the car for him and get the insurance, he still can't drive the car without being licensed or have you with him if he has a learner's permit. Seems a lot of issues when it can be solved with some patience on your friend's end.

You're making a very good point. My friend isn't concerned about the driving but about buying the car asap since it might get sold before he would be ready. And yes he's living with me, but at some point he would want the car to be registered under his name. Will carfax count him as a previous owner after the update?

In that case, go to the dealership. Have your friend tell them he is willing to pay a deposit to have the dealership keep it for him, with the deposit forfeited after 30 days if your friend or you doesn't buy it then. I added you in case your friend doesn't pass his licensing test and you can be the back up so you two don't lose the deposit. I would negotiate with the dealership first on the price, then lay that on them or if you did your research on the prices, you can tell them first. I would think any dealership is willing to work with you on this, knowing they have a sale in the bag and just need to wait a little. Think outside the box.

Don't know about carfax, so not gonna answer that.

Thank you so much, this sounds like a very clever option.

Do you think dealerships might refund my deposit in case they had a better offer from someone else? Because we agreed with him on the price, and we are willing to pay the deposit, but I'm afraid someone else comes on the way and offers more...

By the way, what do I expect from a dealer as a receipt for the deposit? This is the first time I'm buying a used car and I'm not used by anyway to eventual tricks.

Purchase the car when you are 100% ready to sign the contract and take delivery of the vehicle. Why go through all that risk of not being able to get the deposit back? Did you get a killer deal? There are always better deals to be had, just matter of timing.
