Insurers Speed Health Care Overhaul Preparations

The nation's big insurers are spending millions to carry out President Barack Obama's health care overhaul even though there's a chance the wide-reaching law won't survive Supreme Court scrutiny.
It's not that health insurers want to bet big that the court will uphold the Affordable Care Act. It's that they can't afford not to. It will take at least several months and lots of resources for insurers to prepare to implement key elements of the law, which includes a controversial requirement that most Americans have health insurance by 2014.

Personally, I think the carriers are nuts to buy in to this.

Look at how many "bought in" to MA and PDP and those plans aren't mandated.

Now look at how many have retreated or withdrawn completely.

Next look at states with GI and community rating. How many carriers operating there?

You would think they would learn from the past but most folks running carriers are not real bright and they certainly don't understand how to effectively market their products.

Usually you are one of the more thoughtful and reasoned posters... but this is a ridiculous statement. It does not mean that they make some lousy decisions, however.

OK, restated . . .

Some of them are very bright but terribly misinformed on how to effectively design and market their product.

I have worked with a lot of carriers over the years, some very large, some small. More often than not you just shake your head at some of the things they do and then wonder how they manage to survive.
