I have a 69 yr old male, coming off a group plan in December. I am going to put him on a Med Supp December 1. He received a letter stating that he needs to get Part B now, by June 30, or he will be assessed a penalty.

Now, can't he wait until he goes off the group plan to pick up the Part B, or does Texas make him take it now?

Texas has no ability to legislate anything to do with his Part B eligibility. Federal plan, federal rules.

I think what you'll find is that he is turning 65 in June, but is keeping the group until December for some reason.

or

Someone told him he needs to enroll as early as that to make sure he gets enrolled by Dec or he would have to pay a penalty.

or

Someone said Part D and he thought they said Part B.

or

Nope, that's all I can come up with at the moment.

who sent him the letter telling him he had to go on Part B of Medicare now? Was it his employer. If there are 20 employees or less at his job he'll have to take Part B when he turns 65. If there are more than 20 employees at his job he doesn't have to take it until he retires.

I am sorry to hear his plight. There still is a great deal of confusion about medicare and medicare supplements. My wife was a medicare insurance specialist at one of the larger insurance companies.
