My windshield needs to be replaced due to being covered with microscratches and micropitted that cause terrible glare from oncoming headlights at night or low sun (sunrise or sunset).

A friend told me to get comprehensive added to my insurance and wait a month. . . and get the windshield fixed at insurance company's expense.

Is that legal?

thank you benwrigh for such a fast reply.

No problem. I recommend calling local shops in your area. Tell them you will be paying cash and they will commonly give you a lower price.

I did a quote with Safelite online, and the price was a little over $300 for a new windshield.

thanks again benwrigh.

i contacted safelite also & they gave me a quote of $328.95. . . not bad! a lot less than i ever thought a new windshield would cost!

If you ever have to ask "is this legal?" or "is this the right thing to do?", you already know the answer.

If the OP is still reading this, I must reiterate that with some companies, it can affect your rates or affect underwriting with a company. I just had someone get disqualified with Travelers Home & Marine (an auto company) for having 3 comp claims LESS than $1,000 within 36 months.

To clarify exactly why this is fraud... Any time you add insurance coverage to get compensation for preexisting damage, it is considered fraud and never worth the money you would save.
