Is this Normal for this Time of Year?

I opened a P&C agency about 7 months ago. Business has been pretty good (I think). I've been writing about $30K a month in annual premium each month. But so far this month I've had... NADA! Not one sell last week. I can't get anyone interested in talking about insurance. Last month it seemed like business was falling out of the sky. This month I can't seem to give it away.

So for you veteran agents out there. Do you see this trend between Thanksgiving and Christmas where you have a steep decline in business?

I know for our agency there is less "new business" this time of year. We deal mostly in commercial and have a lot of January 1 renewals so most of our time is spent getting some last minute changes done for those policies... I spend a fair amount of time in November and December mapping out my prospects and doing my homework for the upcoming year.

To have it drop to zero is rough, but Thanksgiving through New Years is slow from pretty much everyone. When I was at AIL they would start us working 7 days a week for the first 90 days, but then around this time of year they stopped giving out leads, ignored quotas, and told everyone to work referrals or relax.

We are having are worst 4th quarter in 7 years. Thank god for renewals. The lead volume has dropped off drastically. All we can do is ride it out and plan for next year.

Thansk for the info. When you say that the lead volume has dropped off...

What kind of leads are you depending on for autos and HO? Are you buying leads off the net? Where do you get your leads?

All sources. Internet, call ins, referrals. We have a couple builders that were sending us 20 referrals a month and I think we got 3 this month. Their in house loan officer has told me they pretty much called it quits for the year.

If we do buy leads I will only buy home leads......an auto lead will always need an auto policy.....almost every home lead needs home insurance and owns a car, rental property, might need flood insurance, etc.

December and January are slowest month for us. It start to pick up around march. This is when people start buying properties.

We write about 70 to 80 submissions a month normally, but this month were about 20 so were down almost 50 % December is by far the worst month!

Happy selling though
