So I'm seeing a lot of people wanting to be independent ... I just started at SF and am wondering if I made the right choice ...:1baffled:

Re: SF

I would think that there is a lot of potential with SF. They have some fierce advertising. I'm at an independent agency, so I don't know the rules of SF, but I have a friend there and he said that he is growing. What's your experience like so far? Do they set a lot of goals or give you requirements?

In Virginia their rates must not be competitive because I rarely walk into a business that has their commercial insurance with State Farm. If they do it's because they know the agent, or because they didn't shop around when they purchased their coverage.Very easy to take from the agent.....

I think that is mainly because SF doesn't have an appetite for commercial...at least most commercial.

Sounds like you need to brush up on who your competition is. I've never sold a P&C policy, but even I know that State Farm is a home and auto shop, not a commercial shop. Sadly, they want their agents to be life agents, stock brokers and bankers as well, and most agents want nothing to do with it.

Better you than me! I personally wouldn't touch SF with a ten foot pole.

Ugh ... well ... I'm not in Virginia so that's kinda good ... we're not focused on commercial either so not being competitive there isn't so bad. Honestly I'm just studying for my license right now, but SF is my sponsor, as long as I commit to one year with them. They'll reimburse my licensing expenses. So there's no risk to me. My current boss has already said he doesn't want to see me go and if I ever want to come back, the door's wide open. I think I made the right choice. I have confidence in myself even if it's not a truly competitive company, if anything it'll be a learning experience. I've got sales experience, enthusiasm and persistence. I'll be alright.
