Keep an Eye on The Wall Street Journal

Lastly, I know how you like to ridicule people on this board for not being able to write

The piece that "sman" wrote was quite good... balanced, rational, humorous, hard-hitting, and logical. I'd almost believe that he is a rational centrist and not a right-wing loony. How come the the rest of you wild-eyed "I hate everyone except Rush Limbaugh Ditto-heads" can't write similar pieces? It was quite convincing. When he said that the Reps were not much better... I almost fell out of my chair and on to the floor in shock and awe!

At least there is ONE conservative here who knows how to write, who can think for himself, and who tries to convince... and not preach... in his attempt to reach out to those like me who oppose his views.

I thought that when Blll Buckely left us that the voice of the rational, intelligent conservative was gone forever... a voice that could "talk" to moderate independent voters like myself (I voted for Carter (mod Dem) Reagan (conserv.) , Nixon (once, not second time), Clinton (once, who campaigned as a moderate but wasn't), Dole, and Bush (twice).) You *** Reps always believe that if someone is not with you... then they most be 100% against you. The only one of you who had a clue was Reagan who understood the issues and concerns of those who opposed him and who was able to address them.

Except for "sman" none of you *** Limbaugh racist, reactionaries have the first idea how to present a solid, rational argument that anyone other than a follower of George Walace would read.

Good job, sman. Of course, by criticizing the sainted Reps, you are going to be shunned and ostracized and thrown under a bus by your fellow neo-cons. But I guess you know that already.

I suggest you leave the party of the "small tent" (and getting smaller) and become a moderate independent. Of course you will have to share the room with blacks, hispanics, orientals, and all sorts of minorities... racial, religious, and demographic... so that might be somewhat of an adjustment from your rich, white, and mostly Southern experience, but maybe you can adjust. We'd love to have you... warts and all!

Way to win them over Al. Calling people idiots and racist always works.

How do you know I'm not a moderate independent? Just because I am fiscally and socially conservative doesn't make me right wing. I understand the humanity of us all. That we are all fallible. Yes, even you Al. We just have to learn to work through our imperfections.

Of course you will have to share the room with blacks, hispanics, orientals, and all sorts of minorities... racial, religious, and demographic... so that might be somewhat of an adjustment from your rich, white, and mostly Southern experience, but maybe you can adjust.

Here's where you lose me Al. You make so many assumptions here. While I am a caucasian male, I have many friends of different nationalities. When I say friends, I mean we spend time together. Whether it's eating out or having them over or going to church with them. One of my daughters best friends is a black girl. She has spent the night at our house many times as has my daughter at her house. We let one of my sons black friends live with us for a couple of weeks while he was sorting out some issues with his family. So don't come here and start making character judgments when you no nothing about me. I am immersed in a melting pot of ethniticity.

While I'd love to be rich, I am not rich. I started with nothing. As a child I'm sure I could have been categorized as "white trash". We were poor and I do mean poor. While I may not be poor now, I am far from rich. Although I hope to be there one day.

You speak as if "your" party is the party of inclusion. Yet you bash anything that isn't your party. It reminds me of those idiots on the street corners holding up their signs with phrases like, "Fags are going to burn in hell" or "God hates queers". Why would anyone want to be a part of that kind of hatred? These people don't represent me or my God. So, if you believe "your way" is a better way than the republicans, then why not show the republicans how and why instead of insulting them? If all you do is insult, you're no better than those on the street corners spewing hatred in the name of their religion or your political party.

Down in Georgia, we have this guy named "Clark Howard" that does this radio show (it may be national; not sure). I was on his site one time and saw this article where he was just RIPPING into annuities. It was one of those situations where you're just like, "Man, did you even TRY to research annuities before bashing them?"

Stuff like that irritates me endlessly....

...Lastly, I know how you like to ridicule people on this board for not being able to write so I thought you might want to know you used incorrect grammar above. You stated:

"and it's probably not going to be you or I."

It should have been, ...and it's probably not going to be you or me.
I agree with much of what you said. However, "you or I" is correct, just uncommon for American spoken English. You wouldn't say, "Me will pick the crops."

Didn't mean to mess up your point.

The way the sentence was written was...

...and it's probably not going to be you or I.

You wouldn't say

...and it's probably not going to be I. You would say... and it's probably not going to be me.

The rule I was taught is to replace "I" with "me" and see if it makes sense. Also, you would use "you and I" when it is the subject of the sentence. Whether "you and I" was the subject of the sentence can be debated. Had he begun the sentence with the phrase, "you and I" it would have definitely been correct. But he ended the sentence with you and I.

Amazingly, that section of Al's post seems to have magically disappeared. Or maybe I'm just overlooking it.

Sorry, you're still wrong. The pronoun is subjective, not a direct object. We Americans are routinely fooled by sentences with conjugated forms of the verb "to be."

"It is I." is correct English. http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/grammar-linking-verbs.aspx

"It is me." is comfortable (but incorrect) American.

FYI, I hate when people pronounce the word "insurance" as INsurance as opposed to inSURance. I hope I am spelling this right :)
