Lawyer Looking to Build Professional Relationships

Hello all:

I am a young lawyer based in New York, but I happen to be licensed in New Jersey as well. I operate my own practice with a focus on international business matters, but I am looking to develop the domestic end of my practice.

I have recently been trying to build mutually beneficial relationships with professionals in the financial, investment, insurance and banking industries. I thought it would be useful to register and use this site as a tool to facilitate this networking objective and to learn useful information.

Look forward to speaking with many of you!

Sounds nice, but please be more specific. What are you offering and what are you looking to get?

I wish you well with that. New York is the WORST state in the union when it comes to financial services. I don't think we see too many here from New York that don't work in other states.

While you don't need marketing advice from me, necessarily, I would recommend finding your professional partnerships in New Jersey, and keep your international business in New York. I think you'll find things easier that way, but that's just my opinion on the outside.

Do you do business continuation plans? Buy/Sell agreements? Executive comp plans? Key man agreements? All these things are for business owners to use to use life insurance in creative ways to fund these plans. If you do these, along with general estate planning, you'll probably do okay with personal & business planning with other professionals.

DHK: Sorry for the late response. Thanks for welcoming me DHK! I never heard that about New York, probably because I am not in the financial field.

As far as those legal activities you mentioned, I wouldn't be competent enough to take those types of matters on, at least not currently. The last thing I would want to do is to provide services that I am not comfortable providing and thereby hurt my own reputation and the reputation of the referring professional. Also, continuation planning, buy-sell agreements, and so on, can be quite technical, depending on the situation - lots of moving parts.

I believe that I would feel most comfortable taking on business disputes related to: contracts, partner/shareholder relations, fraud, and significant accounts receivable. At the very least, I am always willing to consider other practice areas and types of clientele, because competencies can generally be built up - it just depends on how much time you have and if it is worth it.

blue_wynd: I wanted to find out if any professionals on these boards have any interest or need to build a relationship with an attorney, and to see how that would work for the benefit of both sides. As far as working out the details, I would work reserve that for private message.
