...... HIPAA is low-dollar comp...
As I understand it, HIPAA in CA is going to 2.5% PPO and 2.9% HMO for Anthem... who has (had?) good rates. And some carriers do a lot of non-med underwriting such that having the right docs in the right format entails a fair amount of work and client hand-holding. Dave020 earns what he gets, and from his mentoring alone over the past five years I owe him more than I could ever repay (and he's never asked for a thing.)
His HIPAA page for CA is excellent. Read and learn.
He has a procedure for doing/writing/handling volume HIPAA business so that it is profitable for him. It is most (or a lot) of what he does, he is good at it, and I'm happy to send him the few HIPAA cases a year that I get.
I'd rather be their life, DI, LTC and annuity advisor and get a referral to their business associates. Dave does a great job... and it reflects a bit back on me... which I'm happy about.
When someone refers a great lawyer or vendor or CPA to you, doesn't your estimation of their "value" to your business rise a bit?

Long explanation that nobody requested.

We have a spread in CA on HIPAA.
Anthem pays, Blue Shield pays, Health Net pays, Aetna pays (ableit 1%) and I believe PacifiCare may still pay.
Kaiser and Cigna pay nothing on HIPAA.
As I understand it, HIPAA in CA is going to 2.5% PPO
On new business, yes.
Still, 2.5% on $900+/month is $270/year.
HIPAA is GI, no underwriting.
Retetion is good. As long as they don't obtain employer coverage or die.
If you write HIPAA business in Ca, be prepared to follow up on the app once you fax. And I do Mean follow up.
Anthem is difficult to deal with. Blue Shield of Ca is easy.
Those are the only two I use.
