Individual maternity coverage is just like individual dental coverage. Insurance companies know that everyone who buys it is going to use it, so the coverage is set up so that the insurance company takes more money from the person than what they pay out. It's basically a payment plan.

Smartest way to pay for a child if you're self employed is through an HSA.

Your best shot is to ask your employer to offer voluntary benefits - supplemental insurance. You would pay the premiums through payroll deduction. Short term disability and hospital indemnity insurance both cover pregnancy along with complications.

If there is an HMO plan available on the individual market in your area, it will probably cover maternity. Most companies selling maternity as an optional rider have a long enough waiting period and high enough price that most people won't buy it.
