MEWA's

I posted this in the group forum...but thought i'd put it here too.

Hey all - new to the forum - semi-new to selling insurance. Fairly experienced and have dabbled in most everything.

What I'm after here is a list (of sorts) of pro's and con's or opinions on MEWA's. I'm fairly certain that the lines of MEWA's are a bit shady with ERISA and what not...and I'm assuming they vary from state to state. From what I know and have heard from more experienced agents, they aren't a way to go. The one I'm dealing with currently is a chamber plan. The rates aren't real competitive and they've only had one renewal to date. The fine print on the employer contract is a bit fishy and I feel a risk to sign...

Any thoughts or past experiences with MEWA's - good or bad -you'd like to share...I'd love to read them.

Most MEWA's these days are fully insured. Exceptions are Taft-Hartley plans.

MEWA's themselves are not "shady" but sometimes the folks operating them are.

I worked with several state sponsored chamber plans a few years ago and they were self funded. That program eventually folded and now the chambers are mostly endorsing plans by carriers like Blue.

I am aware of a mini-med plan that has been marketed to chambers. The issuing carrier is Companion Life.
