Mlr

I don't think they'll make more money unless the mandates change and make it hurt a bit more to go without coverage.
It's not that they will make money the legit way- they will take dirty money from the government in the form of fake bailouts and TARP legislation and all that jazz. Money robbed from each of us, and future generations, rob from Peter to pay Paul. It is criminal.

"This is the biggest windfall in the history of insurance companies"

Not really. Under the current set-up, in 2014, they may not make money.

Sure they will - all they have to worry about is that pesky little 5% profit margin that they do NOT seem to be intent on adjusting.

The Mass. clusterf**k aside - their system of zero comp for individual health brokers doesn't seem to have any negative effect with 97% of all Mass. residents having health insurance.

Circuit City had sales reps on commissions. Their theory was consumers were better served. Best Buy came along without commissioned reps and basically put them out of business. Circuit City even changed their commission-based model but it was too late.

And now allow me to say something a lot of you may disagree with. Here it goes. Are consumers better off dealing with commission based independent health agents?

Out of 100 agents which percentage only wrote for carriers offering 20% advanced commissions? Did brokers really take care of their clients by shopping Kaiser, Blue Cross, Coventry, etc...? Where consumers better off dealing with override happy call centers only pushing two carriers?

A part of me thinks that including comp in the MLRs could level the commission playing field.

Commissioned brokers =/= licensed professionals

Consumers are better served in this case by licensed professionals, who happen to be commissioned sales reps than they are by non-licensed "navigators" who have no skin in the game to ensure that monthly premiums are paid (so the broker gets paid), which takes into account risk vs. monthly premium.

Or at least that's what I need to do as a licensed agent to make sure that I get a customer who trusts in me and will keep paying premium so that I have a business.

It's 2010 and look how bad things are in this country and globally. By the time 2014 gets here, will it really matter? I would be really surprised if we don't see major changes in the landscape of this country before that time. There are 30 some million people out of work I believe and millions of jobs that will take years before they are ever replaced if they even are.

People are in denial about how bad it is. Most of those people are in DC. And on TV.

NAHU belongs to the carriers, not the agents. Follow the money.

Exactly. Also, who do you think contributes to the political races for the head of DOI in each state? I guarantee you that agent contributions are an extremely small fraction.

Until us agents decide to start speaking up and decide to be willing to throw money at the issue, no one will be in our corner fighting for us.

Exactly...couldn't agree more.

JBage007, are you serious? Why stock in those 3? My primary company is IHC. They give us stock certificates based on our production every year. But it's been stuck at around $7 per share since 2008. The certificates are nice to look at, but not worth much.
