Motorcycle Insurance

I have a prospect that has motorcycle insurance with State Farm- Paying $490 a year with 100/300 limits. Also note the guy has an at fault accident and a speeding ticket from his auto policy.

I quoted Foremost- $785
I quoted Progressive- $1,120
SafeCo was rediculous!

Can any other company compete? Or at least get closer?

I know that you have already quoted Safeco - however - they do have a specialty program with lower rates for Harley Davidson Motorcycles. With that being said - if the bike you are quoting is a Harley - make sure you are doing it in the special program.

I wrote a new 2010 Sportster for approx. $345.00 with 100/300 limits ($500 comp. & Coll. Ded, $30 rental..etc) with Safeco and the insured had a speeding ticket of over 10mph. Please note that these are KY rates.

Keep in mind that if his speeding ticket was done within the past year - State Farm might not be charging him yet. I've quoted several clients here in KY who have tickets on file, but their current carriers have yet to run an MVR on their renewal to find out about it - which puts us at a huge disadvantage.

Also, if you quote their auto's along with the Bike, Auto-Owners Insurance may be competative. (However I am unsure if they write in your state? You'll have to check and see.)

Good luck!

Years ago when I was a motorcycle dealer, State Farm was all over the place on rates from year to year.

They got so cheap one year on sport bikes (crotch rockets) that I knew they were crazy and couldn't keep it up. Sure enough the following year they canceled ALL motorcycle insurance for all policy holders. They lost a LOT of business that year.

I'm sure they have figured out that a typical Gold Wing or Harley rider is a much better risk than a sport bike rider by now but they would still be my last choice for motorcycle insurance just because they have a history of such stupidity.

Foremost sponsors Larry Pegram in the AMA Superbike series.
He rides a Ducati.
Not sure if there is a connection or not, or they are just doing a great job of marketing, perhaps they have chosen the Ducati market to go after. Higher priced bikes, more affluent owners, however low volume of new bike sales per year, thus less customer base to go after.
