Need Insurance? 16 and Pregnant? No Problem!

Just realized this little dancy.

As all of you know, no person is eligible for health insurance if she is an expectant mother or if he is an expectant father. Been that way for years. Decades, in fact.

Then along comes Obamacare.

Situation:
Adult parent applies for coverage and wants to add 16 year old daughter who happens to be preggers. Gotta cover her now and with no pre-x.

And in California, as of 1/1/11 (luv writing that date) that kid now is fully insurable ON HER OWN without mom or dad being on the policy, and a premium not to exceed 2 times the normal premium.

Anyone think this won't end up costing millions and millions in adverse claims?

In an op-ed I wrote for the San Francisco paper, I argued this is no longer insurance. Well, it isn't. Insurance is something you buy in case you need it, not because you need it.

In response, dumb-bunnies argued it's just like car insurance which also is required.

Well, first, car insurance is NOT required. What IS required is financial responsibility and the easiest way to prove financial responsibility is to buy insurance. But you can put up a bond, etc., which of course hardly nobody knows about but it is patently incorrect to say auto insurance is "required."

But even if it were required, insurers are not required to accept you if you are an abhorrent risk, or at the least they are allowed to properly assess the risk and charge accordingly. Not in health insurance. Not any more. Which is precisely why it isn't insurance any more. Not quite sure what it is but the "S" word does come to mind.

Of course, some insurers make a living off of writing minimum coverage plans with outrageous premiums. Is that an alternative health insurers have? NOT.

Every time I turn around I swear - literally. That's what I do - I swear.

Fning *** DEMocrats. They know not what they do. I can't believe insurance companies allowed this to happen.
:skeptical:

It's also not like auto insurance in that auto insurance wouldn't pay for the accident that happened prior to the insurance taking effect (i.e. pre-existing condition), or in this case, auto insurance would not pay for a pregnant car.... (which I think is the old AMC Pacer)

It's also not like auto insurance, since auto policies are rated to the risk, virtually without caps. Two DUI's? Carriers don't have to accept, those that do make it cost prohibitive. There are carriers that specialize in high risk markets though.

I love the people offering up auto insurance as a comparison - just nailed one against the wall last week:

"Auto insurance is mandatory."

"Even if you don't drive a car?"

"Well...um, you still get my point."

"Fine, let's stay with your point. What would happen to your auto coverage if you got 3 DWIs?"

"You'd be cancelled."

"So what should a health carrier do to people who eat too much and smoke?"

End of conversation.

To continue on

So your auto policy pays for your oil changes and tire rotation?

Most folks don't really care if the insurance carrier makes money or not. In fact, they believe carriers make too much money.

Of course they don't care how much money the government has to print in order to pay for the deadbeat and moocher class either.
