Welcome to the forum. I emancipated my self several years back from a captive organization. I personally like being independant; and I am sure that most of the board will agree.

What would you like about being independant? If the answers you list here out weigh what you like about the captive world; then you have made your decision.

I am from Festus, Mo., about 20 miles south of St. Louis.

I just hope I will be more competitive, being independent. Some companies cater to a certain group, those that fall within a certain range as far as credit scores. I realize that is a factor, but credit scores today have dropped for good hard working people due to the economy. I would love to be able to offer them a quote that is affordable, with good coverage.

Welcome, always nice to see another Missouri agent here. I'm in the middle of the state.

I know Festus very well, have a lot of clients there. :)

What kind of insurance are you selling? I started captive but went independent. I'm much happier now.

Selling property, casualty, life and health. Very new to the business, 1 year. Did you have to get an "Agency license" from Mo. when you opened your own office? Fimiliar with city and county license, emailed Mo. Dept of Insurance, no reply. Being independent, what route did you take to get with multiple carriers? Have looked at SAIS, as some companies do not want to accept?

Thanks for both the replies

I have had an agency license in MO, but you do not need one unless you name your agency something other than your name, such as Insurance Professionals, or whatever. If you stick to Your Name Agency, you do not need an agency license in Missouri.
