New to the Forum, Here to Help Out!

OMG, it wasn't my mistake. It was the keyboard on my computer----the "b" and "y" keys are worn out. Thanks for noticing that. The correction will be made. Sorry.

No problem, chief.

It's not annoying at all when people pick out minor grammatical, spelling and syntax errors from inconsequential posts on a message board, is it?

Oh wait...yes it is.

Typos don't bother me, but destruction of the English language does. I think I must have been a proofreader in another life.

I have a degree in English, so yeah, it bothers me, too...but not enough to proofread, correct, and grade illiterate-ass insurance agents' posts on a message board.

I guess we're different, you and me.

I may be just more sensitive than you, Randy. BTW that's O.K. I totally agree with your phraseology of "illiterate-ass insurance agents' posts.";)

It's not that I don't get annoyed at sloppy writing--I do. It's just that I don't see that point in trying to correct people here.

We're talking about grown men getting stumped on homophones ("week" and "weak," recently) and the not-so-subtle differences between "there", "their" and "they're" for chrissakes. Let's not even start with comma splices, semicolon use, or--God help us--style. They're past help.

So you're clearly not correcting them for their own sakes: it just pisses them off and they're not going to take it as constructive criticism. And you can't be correcting them for the edification of other readers: the people who don't know the difference still won't know the difference and probably don't care anyway; and the people who know caught the error originally and moved on.

So this leads me to believe you're only correcting other people's posts for your own enjoyment. Perhaps proofreading insignificant message board minutiae makes you feel important, smart, or useful? If so, that's fine I guess, but it comes off as condescending and silly.

But whatever. You have over 6,000 posts and I assume a hefty percentage of those were dedicated to making someone feel dumb, so I don't figure you'll stop anytime soon.

Just know that people who do know the difference are annoyed with it, too.

Sorry you're miffed, but I don't do it to be annoying. I do it because I am annoyed, particulary when these are people that profess to be professionals. I guess I am just old school and can't (and will not) change. It's an open forum-----free speech, etc.. BTW you can use the "ignore" button if I really bother you that much.

Like I said, whatever you do is fine. No one--especially not me--is trying to tread on whatever right you have to post.

The points I was making (or at least trying to make) are: 1.) it's not particularly helpful for either the poster or the reader; and 2.) it comes off snotty.

But hey, whatever. For the most part, I appreciate literate people who are careful in their writing.

Oh, and you misspelled "particularly".

Just trying to help you look more professional.

Thank you for pointing out the typo. It is duly noted and corrected. Dammit, I forgot to take my meds when I posted that. As for being helpful or not, while not really trying to police the forum, I hope that my criticism will be taken constructively to help improve the professionalism on this insurance forum. I appreciate people who are careful in their writing, too. I believe that it reflects their attitude in all areas.
