Hi and thanks I'm glad to be here. i want to sell Med Supps because 1st- I love the older people. Mostly because both of my parents while they were living; were on very fixed incomes and they had medicare w/ a medicare supp. Seriously the supplement took care of everything that medicare didn't and they both were able to get the best of care during their last years. So, it's near and dear to my heart. i want to help the older people.

I'm a Med Supp guy myself. The renewals are very attractive as you get 1st year commissions for 6 years (in 57 of the 60 states). If you're going to do it, you need to learn Medicare and Med Supps inside out. You can start here.

You also need to learn to navigate https://www.medicare.gov/

It's going good Lin, and you're very welcome. I could ramble on, but I thought I'd give you that to start with. If after spending time with those 2 links, you want more info, there are plenty of experienced agents on here that'll help you out. Good luck.

P.S. Ignore the PM's you get from marketers. They'll try to take advantage of your inexperience. They won't post in the open, because they know that they'll get called out on their BS by the experienced agents. The honest ones post for all to see. One of the advantages of the Forum.

Medicare Supplements and FE are a great tie in. You need to learn one or the other 1st...learn it well before adding the other.

If you go FE 1st, Med Supps aren't good for cross selling that clientele very often...most of them can't afford it.

If you go Med Supp 1st, then FE's great for cross selling. You can use the money you save your clients on a Med Supp to pay for the FE.

Hi Illini. Question about prospects for FE vs. Med Supps. Would FE typically be lower class people, while supps would be middle/upper class? I'm trying to minimize the amount of cat pee couches in my life!

Also, would supps be better if I'm not in a rush for the income? Whereas FE commissions are more profitable earlier?

Yes, FE is typically lower income. Medicare Supplements have less of the icky stuff, although I had a client once that I sat on his dog piss soaked couch. I had to go home(30 minute drive) and take another shower and change clothes. After that I always went right to the kitchen table and made him my last call of the day.

FE is quicker money, Med Supps pay better in the long run. If you lead with Med Supps, you can cross sell FE with it. That way you're building for the future and getting some quick FE money. They make a nice mix and you cut out most of the cat piss.

Yes, if you're not in a rush for the income, I'd definitely go with Med Supps.

I'm just now really hearing more about FE. 1. I've heard some mixed reviews about Medicare Advantage. Mostly that it's not the best way to go for seniors; but I'm only basing that by word of mouth. Should I stay away from offering MA? Also, do I have a chance of being successful being an IA and will it be difficult for me to obtain appointments with Aetna, Mutual of Omaha, New Era & Medco. These look to be the most popular in TX for 2017? Also, being independent where do I get my start up leads for Med Supp? Should I partner with a broker? I just don't want to be in a commitment where I cant have my book of business.
Thanks again and Happy New Year.

If you're new, I'd leave MA alone for now...lots of silly rules and regulations. After you learn Med Supps, if you want to consider MA, you'll have less confusion. Personally, I'd steer clear of MOFO. They have the name, but they also have a terrible history of jacking up their premiums, then closing that book of business...then rolling out a new company. They're on #4 now.

When shopping for a FMO(s), make sure you get a release agreement signed before you sign anything and don't assign your commissions. That way, if you want leave you can and you take your book with you. If they won't give you a signed release...keep looking. You can have more than one FMO. Most FMO's can assist you with the leads...some even have lead co-ops. Personally, I don't like to put all my eggs in one basket.

You should get advice about FE from agents that actually sell FE for a living.

There's completely different stories told. One by the ones that do and one by the ones that don't.
