I posted this in the auto forum but wanted to post it here and can't figure how to move it so I am just reposting.

Everywhere I go I hear no carrier is appointing in the nj/ny area. Has anyone had some recent experience as a start at up and was able to get appointments in the metro/ tri-state area?

This is mostly for personal lines.

Ok so how bout this...

What companies are easier to get appointed with? I hear progressive is one. How about Met or Firemans Fund

Are there any must have companies for home and auto in the tri-state area?

i think those are substandard, and they were pretty easy.

all the easy appointments, i wrote 1 or two cases because its not competitive.... you got gotta work on the non-preferred market for a while.

also you can try to force placement insurance thing for auto. for ny its call nyaip. basically for people who cant get insurance and the premium is like 4-5k they have no choice.

Thank bud,

I am in the process in putting all my ducks in place. I will take a look at all those places as well as a few others such as erie, prog, & met.

I am also going to try and hook up with another agency like you did to utuilze some of their markets.

Foremost rep told me they are not giving appoitment right now.
Let me try other two.

Let me know if you had any luck with anyone of these companies. I would love your input.

I applied for erie few times but no one has called back yet.

erie isnt doing business in NYC, they only reach to westchester but they have the ability to write nyc.

i met with the erie reps before and their not looking to expand to the nyc market.

foremost said they were giving me the apointment in 2011 but will start 2012. 2012 i called they said they were no longer giving out appointments

You're going to have a better shot of getting decent carrier with a cluster network.

If you want a Travelers or Hartford etc... your best bet is to join a cluster and loose some commission until you get a big enough book. Or stay in the cluster and eventually reap some bonus with the profit sharing plans.

In NY you won't be very competitive if you only have the easy appointments of Progressive and other substandard carriers.

just my 2 cents.
