My Manufactured home and all possesions were destroyed in a fire a week ago Thursday. Leaving our family and pet without a home, while insurance goes thru the motions , I have heard from them once , this past wed , and they stated we may not hear anything for two weeks . I am staying at a hotel, which we are paying out of pocket, although the insurance co is saying to save reciepts, and sent us a 2000 dollar check which we have not recieved yet to cover expenses.

I have tried to find a rental home or apartment and am not having any luck, it looks like i could be without a home for a couple months , at the very least, should the insurance company be looking for me , or do they believe since we are in a hotel room , and have to eat meals out etc, that we are ok?

How long a turn around should I expect, some say we should hire a state adjuster , sorry I rambled on , but never had this happen before . Advise only.

I'm not sure what you think you'd be getting on here other than advice.

If they're saying they are going to cut youa check for 2,000 then that's great. It's unlikely that the insurance company is going to be liable for finding you a place to live.

Do you have an agent that sold you the policy? What state is this in?

I am In NH ,I didnt know if they could be of help, since I cant seem to locate anyone that would rent us a short term housing,
And also didnt know the time frame of an insurance claim

I have seen the insurance company go find rental houses fro people, fairly often, they have brokers they work with to put people in homes until their house is ready.

I would call them daily, if no response, work your way up the ladder.

The fact that they are providing loss of use is a good sign. Look at your policy to determine what your loss of use amount is or talk to the adjuster and see what the amount is. This is something that you should know if you come close to exhausting early in the game so you can talk with your adjuster before it becomes a problem.

If you ever feel like the insurance company is dragging their feet or acting like they won't cover a claim that should be covered, go to the DOI and have them investigate. However, and this has been mentioned by Josh, I feel it's not completely necessary and sometimes the company just has some delays for reasons none of us will know. They should pay out fine if everything is in order.

I'm dealing with a claim for a client right now where lightning struck her car- she lives in the middle of nowhere in SC and it's taking almost a week to 10 days to get an adjuster to LOOK at the damage because the independent adjuster in the area is swamped and has to make a special trip to see them. Things like this happen- you're getting loss of use which is there for things like this.

However, I do agree with RBA- you should be in constant contact with your adjuster to find out what is going on. That is your right and your duty as an insured going through insurance for a claim.

A fire loss is something I haven't dealt with yet as an agent but I've heard from other agents that there are some special investigations that have to occur there to determine the cause of the fire (read: intentional or not) Someone else could shed some light on that but it could be why they are saying to wait 2 weeks.

Hope that helps, stay strong with your family. Nothing is more important than them- things can be fixed and replaced but people cannot. I'm glad to hear that everyone got out of harm's way.
