Noob Question About Preferred and Nonstandard

How do I know which insurance carrier is considered preferred and which is considered nonstandard?

I have assumed that very large companies like AIG, Hartford, Safeco are preferred. Access and Dairyland would be considered nonstandard. But what about companies like Explorer, Kemper Specialty, GMAC, and all the other companies in between?

I appreciate any advice in advance.

I dont think there is a list of standard and nonstandard. I think your best bet would be to list wich companies you want to lnow about and we can tell you or ask the companies marketing rep. Its hard to say because there are companies that are standard that have non-standard products and vice versa

Yeah I been searching all over the internet and have not found any information.

Well the companies I really want to know about are...
Progressive, Kemper Specialty, Foremost, GMAC, Commerce West, Explorer

Thanks!

I dont know anything about kemper so i cant say there but they are all non standard.

Take into account some of those insurance companies use mgas to distribute or operate under different divisions so you could be selling commerce west as clearside general or progressive through drive insurance

Prog- Sub
Kemper- Preferred
Foremost-sub
GMAC, kinda both....

Havent heard of the other 2....

This is a bit more correct but there the difference between substandard and non-standard isn't really much. Standard and non-standard doesn't really make a difference anyway because even in their respective categories each company will have its own target appetite for whom they prefer as a client.

Progressive - Can do either preferred or non-standard but I consider them more on the preferred side.

Kemper - I would not consider putting a preferred client with them unless it was an unusual senario. It's more of a grey market in my opinion.

GMAC - Can do either preferred or non-standard. I have one client with multiple 2011 Mercedes with them, the premium rocked!

Commerce West - I consider them non-standard.

Never used Explorer so I am not sure about that one.

Are you drunk? Kemper is one of the best preferreds out there, and Progressive is most certainly SUB-STANDARD, most companies consider Prog substandard, especially in regards to prio-insurance discounts. Hartford for one, will ask you in the quote, why substandrd previous carrier..

Now Inside Progressive, if the client owns a house, then they have a "preferred" tier and will say so right one quote....but this isnt what the OP is taling about.

For an "easy" reference to who is preferred or not, a "loose" way to tell, is if that company sells umbrella policies.....

Are we going to battle? lol, jk.

Regarding Kemper, I will have to check that out. I havent been using them since they bought Unitrin Specialty. Maybe they have changed, I just know that when we put preferred clients with them, it never worked out as well as I would have liked.

So, no argument there which is why I make sure everyone knows these are my opinions not fact.

Progressive does offer umbrella policies so your argument is invalid. Again, Progressive provides products for both non-standard and preferred clients hence the policy tiering. I look at them as the swiss army knife of insurance companies. I have many happy preferred and non-standard(mostly kids) clients with them.

Damn, i'm sounding like a Progressive cheerleader! I am not! lol
