Noob Question About Preferred and Nonstandard

if hes a broker progressive will be called drive insurance and that is most definitely sub at best. they are only competitive through their business and professional or AAA programs. they do try to go after standard clients but i would hardly consider them preferred.

Keep telling yourself that.

It's no fluke that I have been writing all these 500 CSL policies w/ umbrellas with Progressive. It's one of the most competitive preferred products out there, especially when compared to Travelers, State Farm, Farmers, Encompass, etc. It seems like the only ones complaining about it are my competitors!

I will say, the only thing missing from Progressive is a HO program that they own.

I'm only talking about auto. Progressive has one of the worst auto rates in Cali. They are good with the motorcycles and other toys though.

Totally different situation here in Arizona but I see your point. I noticed they were lacking for some parts of Nevada as well.

Hey the op asked about kemper specialty.... Not kemper. Kemper specialty is the new name of unitrin which is non-standard. Kemper is prefferred.... Two different paper companies.

yeah Unitrin became Kemper Specialty as of Apr. 9.

they are definitely separate from Kemper Preferred and have complete opposite target markets. I just got appointed with KS two weeks ago. From what few quotes I've ran so far, KS is very competitive in the high risk market, which is the type of market KP tries to avoid. KS does seem to get a little pricey with comp and collision, which KP is very competitive at.

Progressive rates suck in AZ, so I dont know what you are writing, and their policy overall sucks.

Preferred vs Standard vs NonStandard

These are very blurry lines and they actually refer more to the client than they do the carrier. Then you'll find different clients fit better with different carriers. Then, all of this is regional.

In California, we don't use credit, so that part will have to be filled in by those who care...

Nonstandard is easiest for me to define - Does not have a valid license, or has multiple major infractions, multiple accidents, etc. This is clients that most carriers would reject.

Standard - May or may be currently insured, may have a ticket or accident (or both).

Preferred - Currently insured, no tickets, no accidents (or at least qualifies for good driver). Eligible for multi-line, usually higher limits.

As an agency, you love your preferred clients since they are the ones that tend to pay their bills, and you only hear from them when they need to make changes.

Standard clients tend to be your bread and butter, but take up time in service work. Perhaps an occassional service call to remind them to make their payments.

Nonstandard clients run the course, I have some that have seen the errors of their ways, just pay the bill and keep going till they clean up the record. Others I have to chase frequently. Some I let drop because all they want to do is file claims.

It's also worth noting that the primary difference between Standard and Non-Standard is that the former follows the ISO policy format.

BTW, I did some research on Progressive in Cali and from what it sounds like, it is more non-standard in that state due to the lack of credit rating.

^^^^^Thanks for pointing that out! I just checked and sure enough, you're correct. I will have to check out Kemper Preferred.

Progressive is hot and cold, but we probably write more PL policies with them than any other carrier.

So, I'm not complaining!

But, maybe in the parts of the state you write for they don't do as well. I know Titan Auto rates suck where I am at but are much better in the Phoenix areas.

Also, how do Progressive policies suck? I have re-marketed people from carriers like MetLife to Progressive with better premiums and coverages. I know the contract inside and out and find it to be one of the better ones out there. Pretty much ISO with some enhancements. But, I would love to hear your take on it, maybe i'm stupid or something :goofy:
