North Carolina Health Companies

So all new agents whether resident or non-resident will be required to only sell BCBS in NC if appt. with the blues?

I'm not sure what Thackeragency is referring to. I am an independent broker free to represent other carriers, and he himself said he sells other plans. There are perks and some marketing assistance if you commit to selling for BCBSNC exclusively, but it is not required in anyway.
As far as competition is concerned, I wish that was the case. However, as stated before, it is rare that another carriers rates and plans fit my clients needs once compared. Not to mention the big question...how long will some of these carriers be writing business in NC? I know Assurant will, they've always been here. Golden Rule left the state before and just recently re-entered. Now they have the Unitedhealthcare name backing them, which I think is great, but what happens if UHC dumps them? Bottom line, if you compare the language in every carriers contract, it really isn't debateable what the best carrier is.

I'm still waiting to be contact by the regional director of the Charlotte, NC area for appointment details. I hope they don't require exclusivity because that might complicate my plans.

BCBS has certainly had the market here in NC for the past 10 years, and it has been tough to sell anything else. However, there are new plans available that take on BCBS and beat it. I'm replacing Blue which I have never been able to do up to this point.

exclusivity for the NC individual market

OK, I'm having trouble posting here.

Blue Cross has been trying to have its agents sign an exclusivity contract for a couple years now. Now for current agents it is 'optional', but I can tell you they are giving me all sorts of crap for not signing it and having other companies on my website. It is only for the individual product line and not for the group line.

I sell other products because I've been doing it for so long. It is the new contract they discussed in the agent meeting this month. In 2 years it won't be optional. 5 years ago there was no need for it. BCBSNC feels there is a need for it now because of the quality competition in the state. The 'benefits' you get for signing the exclusivity contract are not so good. But I'd be willing to bet that any new agent will have to sign the exclusivity contract.

I am fortunate to sell BCBSNC, but they raised their rates so high that other companies can actually come into this market and make a profit for shareholders. I prefer to put my clients with BCBSNC, but there are many other options now that are just as good (or close to as good).

They made this change so that they could continue their 15 - 20 % rate increases and have agents dedicated to their product. I used to sell BCBSNC when it was MORE expensive than its competitors and had less benefits. I still will, but my marketing abilities have been hampered by them because I did not sign the exclusivity contract.

What companies/plans are you talking about?

The rates are very nice and the plans seem good at face value. Golden Rule seems like a good second place company followed by Assurant and their rates. I haven't looked into Celtics plans down in NC yet, but if they are the same down there as they are up here in MD, better to put clients elsewhere.....
