Part Time Independent Agent - NO Experience, how can it be done?

As a former marketing executive, I am considering entering the insurance industry and have started the process with a few captive options (American Family - Agency Owner, All State - Agency Purchase or NY Life - Agent) but want to explore if I can leverage a broker's appointments to sell insurance as a part-time independent agent (P/C, Life, Commercial). The broker is in another state but is licensed in my state. My dream is to have my own independent agency where I can offer a variety of products and carriers. I would welcome any feedback on: 1) Is this feasible or am I better off going with one of the captive opportunities I am considering? 2) If feasible, what would you recommend as the best way to structure this relationship?
