Prospecting Idea Will It Work ??

I will be selling Medicare supplements very soon and I am trying to come up prospecting ideas that will be fruitful and will be the best use of my time.

The idea I have is this:
1. Buy door tags
2. Buy a list of locals that are between the ages of 65-70
3. Knock on their door to introduce myself
4. If they are home see if I can speak with them, IF THEY ARE NOT HOME, leave a door hanger stating that I was by to " review their Medicare supplement insurance with them". (if they call and say they don't even have a MS, GREAT, I will find an affordable one for them. If they do have one, I will save them money, NO WRONG ANSWER) The hanger will let them know that I will be calling soon. The door hanger would be very simple, maybe a description of who I am and what I do, phone number, etc. A brief description of my community involvement, interest,family, Church, etc.

Please keep in mind that I live in rural Virginia in a town of about 15000 people.

Isn't door knocking for seniors banned by CMS though? Unless maybe only in my state.
 
In the car business, which way were you more apt to find customers? Was it by going out and knocking on the doors of people that looked like they might need a new car or did you get more sales by letting the interested people come to you?
My point being, if you can find a way to let the interested people come to you, wouldn't your time be better spent? Direct mailers always worked great for me. I'm not saying that your time spend going and knocking doors will not produce results, but think about your time...and time is money! You would be better off cold calling on the phone from a "Little Mrs. List" and telling them you were following up on your flyer you sent to them in the mail (whether you mailed one out or not).

Good point. I am looking for fairly low cost until I really get rolling and that is what cane to mind. That is the great thing about this forum, good advice from those that he been there.

By the way, with a few days off, I am getting ansy. I haven't had a complete weekend off in a year and a half.:)

CMS only governs Medicare Part C plans. An agent can use any method during any time of the year to sell Medicare Supplement Policies.

Welcome to the wonderful world of insurance where the highs are among the highest and the lows can be three feet lower than whale crap. haha

Of all of the different kinds of insurance, I believe Med Supps are the easiest to prospect for. Over the years I have gotten it down to the point where it is pretty smooth and easy for me. I don't buy leads and haven't purchased a list for around two years.

Knocking on doors can be a very successful way of selling Med Supps. I did it for a while when I first started selling Med Supps. When I was captive I worked with an agent who only knocked on doors, never picked up the phone and he consistently wrote around $175,000 in premium a year.

I really like the idea of the door hanger. I think It has a lot of potential. However, learning to use the phone is also going to be extremely important as well. Just about all the Med Supps I sell are to people that I may have initially contacted 12, 18, 24 or even 36 months ago.

If you are going to buy a list make it for people 64 1/2 to 78. When I use to purchase lists they were for people 67 to 78 with incomes starting at $12,000. I have tried to work the "younger ones" many times and found them to be not very good prospects, at least for me. Too much wasted time and too few sales compared to working 67 to 78.

If the town you live in only has 15,000 people I think you are going to find that you are going to have to expand the area beyond just your local area. Go to leadconcepts.com. You can select an area, town, zip code and see how many people with the income and range of ages there are.

It's a great idea. I have two little things to add: At the top put a tagline Paying to much for _______?, then offer something of value for free, and we have plans starting as low as $xxx/month*
 
Here's another source for Seniors leads. 6 out of the 7 largest health insurance companies in the US use this company for seniors leads, because that is this lead company's specialty. Also, I have seen several "Senior Leads Sites" which are nothing more than interfaces with this company. So, why not go directly to the source?
