I'm an independent guy working mainly with group health. I have a friend who has a Nationwide agency where I'm thinking about going on board and selling P&C as well. What are the challenges of doing both? I really can't see it being that big of a deal but wanted to get some feedback from those that have experience with both. Thanks!

Who's going to do your P&C service work (there's a bunch)? Is he getting a cut of your health or does he plan on you writing through his contracts so that he owns the book?

The Nationwide agency will service the business, much as my GA services my health care.

I don't understand by your statement of them having a very limited appetite. From what I can tel,l their product offering is very extensive.

Nationwide has a very limited appetite for commercial business in my part of the country. Auto Repair, restaurants and Lessor's Risk (landlords) are basically all they do in CA. I would look into their offerings in your area before partnering with a captive agent.

Just because a company can write a policy does't mean the rates will be reasonable. An independent agency will have many markets that will offer a variety of pricing on various risks.
